Not Just a
Man's War: Michigan Women and the Civil War
In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, discover the
unique contributions made by Michigan women. Michigan women were on the
frontline during the Civil War serving as as nurses in hospitals and on
the battlefield. Some bold women even disguised themselves as men to
serve in battle. And then there is the story of the home front, which
did not remain static during the four long years of war. Women took on
new roles and responsibilities left behind by men: they ran businesses,
tended farms, raised families, and sent their support in the form of
supplies, letters, and money-- often not knowing the condition of their
soldier husband, father, sweetheart, brother, or son.
